LHSC’s Implant Retrieval Laboratory is Canada’s first and largest such facility, with more than 5,000 hip, knee, and shoulder implants that have been removed from patients during revision surgery. In our research studies, we can use technology such as micro-CT, coordinate measuring machines, profilometry, and electron microscopy to characterize damage, wear, and corrosion on each device. By correlating these findings with information on the implant design, patient, and surgery, we can establish why some implants may last longer than others. Ongoing work is also implementing advanced medical imaging modalities to better understand the immune response to wear debris.
