Joint Inflammation

Despite being considered mechanical devices, the biological response to joint replacement implants is of critical importance. We are particularly interested in the inflammatory processes that occur around implants, including synovitis, arthrofibrosis, infection, and adverse reactions to metal or polyethylene debris. We study these reactions using positron emission tomography (PET) tracers that measure cellular activity. We are also very interested in the role of the gut microbiome on joint infection and inflammation.
